SELF-ACTUALIZATION
When we think of self-actualization
we are lead to the world-renowned psychologist Abraham Maslow, who
placed it at the apex of his hierarchy of human needs and motivations.
He determined that from a psychological perspective that there are
certain needs that must be met (i.e. food, water and shelter) before
self-actualization can occur. Once those basic needs are met then
the potential lies within each of us become self-actualized.
Maslow admits that most people are too preoccupied with their basic
needs to focus on self-actualization, placing only 2% of the population
in this category, including Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein, Eleanor
Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr. He found common characteristics
among these people including: a good sense of humor, concern for
the welfare of others, deep appreciation of the basic experiences
of life, and an ability to establish close personal relationships
with a few people.
So, what is Self-actualization? Self-actualization is using your
full potential. It's fulfillment on all levels; it is having a basic
trust and flow with the Universe. It is absent of blockages, such
as fear and worry. It is absent of limiting thoughts, beliefs and
prejudices; it is being Spiritually Centered, fully self-identified
and fulfilled. Yet, one who is self-actualized is far from self-centered,
he is supportive of others and serves as a guide to help them in
their movement towards self-actualization.
